Transformer oil maintenance is the key to reliability to obtain good performance from transformers. The insulating oil should be free from moisture, dissolved gases and particles. Even some new oils require treatment to limit these contents to suitable levels.
Transformer oil ages and reduces the life of a transformer. Oil ultimately begins to breakdown due to foreign particles and impurities such as water and gases. When the oil in a transformer reaches this stage the oil must be reclaimed.
