Load Studies

As facilities grow or are modified, the load on a circuit may either lighten or increase to the point of stretching that circuit's safe capability. An unusually light load does not generally indicate the need for corrective action, but a stretched capability could point to a potential problem.

Heat build-up is the greatest enemy of electrical equipment. An overloaded circuit may well be a problem in the making. To fully understand system loading, a one-line diagram is necessary to determine the interactions, if any, among the various circuits. Usually, a facility has such a drawing available. If not, one must be generated.

Another reason for having an electrical load study available is to enable the best overcurrent protection settings for each circuit.

You may also need a load study to:

  • Ascertain that none of your circuits are heading for trouble
  • Enable the best overcurrent protection settings for each circuit
  • Provide information on how to correct undesirable unbalanced voltages caused by improperly distributed loads
